Dead Lucky is Australian climber Lincoln Hall’s account of his Everest climb in 2006 where he now famously died, and then re-entered the land of the living after spending a night out in the open at 28 000 ft. The story follows the build up to his successful summit and the events of his near tragic descent, where Hall rapidly succumbed to cerebral edema. He is left for dead by his Sherpa team, who are in dire straits themselves, but survives a night of extreme conditions and experiences with other states of consciousness to be rescued by a multi-national effort over the following days. This is an agonising, challenging and occasionally funny account of what transpired (funny in an ‘oh shit I’ve lost my mind at 8000m’ kind of way). The author’s dedication to Buddhist meditation and understanding of spiritual practice enlightens what is a genuinely remarkable and nicely written story.
