Enquanto servia como enfermeira na Segunda Guerra Mundial, Renault escreveu seus próximos três livros. Depois da guerra, viajou para diversos países. Quando foi para a Grécia se encantou com a cultura do país e sua história e começou a estudar e escrever livros que recorrem à história da Grécia Antiga, no período clássico. Mary Renault faleceu em 13 de dezembro de 1983.
