But the house doesn't sell, and Belinda Carlisle still haunts their home: every day the creature becomes fatter and more malodorous. When the house burns to the ground in a freak conflagration and the couple's daughter, April, is born blind soon thereafter, the marriage is never the same again. Only on a business trip three years later does Rachel begin to reckon with the damage. In an Orlando motel room far from Ted and April, Rachel wonders: Is her simple-minded husband more vindictive and manipulative than even Rachel could have imagined? How far will she go to keep the upper hand—a bit of emotional and physical torture, perhaps? Will she win the battle, only to lose so much else? If all is fair in love and war, there are few contemporary writers better equipped than Palahniuk to travel the extremes, right to the chilling intersection of "I do" and "I'm damned."

Chuck Palahniuk (nascido em Pasco, Washington a 21 de Fevereiro 1961) é um escritor residente em Portland, Oregon. O seu trabalho mais popular é Fight Club (Clube de Combate em Portugal e Clube da Luta no Brasil), que foi posteriormente adaptado para cinema. Os personagens na obra de Palahniuk são indivíduos que, de uma ou outra forma, foram marginalizados pela sociedade, frequentemente reagindo com agressividade auto-destrutiva. A narrativa nos livros de Palahniuk começam, não raramente, no seu fim cronológico, com o protagonista a recontar os eventos que conduziram ao ponto que forma o princípio do livro. Por bastantes vezes há um ponto de viragem da história, na forma de uma revelação inesperada perto do fim. O estilo de Palahniuk é caracterizado pelo uso e repetição de frases curtas plenas de humor cínico ou irónico. O autor gosta de descrever o seu estilo como Ficção transgressional. Os direitos cinematográficos de Survivor (Sobrevivente) foram vendidos, mas nenhum estúdio se empenhou na adaptação do romance. Isto deve-se ao facto de o protagonista de Survivor se suicidar ao despencar de um avião contra o solo do deserto australiano. Depois dos ataques no Pentágono e no World Trade Center a 11 de Setembro os estúdios de cinema consideraram o romance demasiado controverso. A edição de Março de 2004 da revista Playboy publicou um conto de Chuck Palahniuk intitulado Guts (que integra o seu último livro, Haunted). Quando da sua digressão em 2003 para promover o romance Diary, o autor leu o conto para as audiências. Alegadamente mais de 35 pessoas desmaiaram ao ouvir a leitura, embora os eventos sejam factuais, a veracidade das reacções é bastante discutida. Em 2003, foi realizado por membros do site oficial do autor um documentário em filme sobre a sua vida, chamado Postcards from the Future: The Chuck Palahniuk Documentary [1]. O site oficial, "The Cult" (O Culto) como se auto-intitulada, iniciou uma oficina de escrita onde o próprio Chuck Palahniuk ensina os seus truques. Todos os meses o autor escreve um ensaio sobre um dos truques (ensaios estes que serão compilados num livro sobre escrita minimalista). É um autor muito dedicado aos seus fãs como pode ser observado no site oficial.
