A obra de John Milton não é apenas uma reflexão sobre a queda do homem e a origem do mal, mas também uma meditação profunda sobre o livre-arbítrio, a justiça divina e a relação entre Deus e a humanidade. O inferno que Milton cria é vasto e assustador, e a luta interna de Satanás, um dos maiores anti-heróis da literatura, é fascinante. Como uma católica, me senti particularmente tocada pela maneira como Milton explora a teodiceia e a questão da liberdade humana, uma reflexão que me fez lembrar as Confissões de Santo Agostinho, onde ele também lida com as tensões entre o livre-arbítrio e o pecado.
