Nine-year-old Prabir Suresh lives with his parents, two entomologists, on an otherwise uninhabited island in the Indonesian Ocean. The island has no real name but Prabir calls it Teranesia and populates it with fantastic imaginary animals. Meanwhile his parents continue their study of the evolutionarily puzzling butterflies on the island. Thirty years into the new millennium the discovery of a bizarre new species draws Prabir’s sister, Maddy, a biologist, back to the island. Prabir has reasons of his own to get there first. Who will win the race and what will they find? An evolutionary leap forward, a new humanity or the evanescent ghosts of past lies?
