Living in San Franciso at the dawn of the 20th century, young Delia Martin has seen some wonders in her life, because from childhood her most loyal companions were ghosts. She has been gifted (or some would say cursed) with an ability to peer across to the other side. She used her powers and the help of those ghosts to defeat a twisted serial killer and has found peace with the police captain Gabe Ryan. That peace is threatened when a strange young girl starts haunting their lives. As Delia tries to discover what this ghost wants her to do, she is drawn to a charismatic medium who promises universal love and suffrage for all. But her message might carry a different message as young people begin to disappear and her audiences seem gripped by fervor not attributable to simple persuasion. As Delia unearths the mystery, she confronts a horrible choice—will she have to sacrifice everything to save her beloved city?
