Estudou na Universidade estatal de Murray, licenciando-se em Arte. Era uma maestra de quinto grau dantes de dedicar à escritura de maneira profissional. Em 1967, Jude casou-se e tomou o apellido de seu esposo, White. Quatro anos mais tarde separaram-se. Mais tarde casou-se com Claude Montassir, e adoptaram um menino, Sam Alexander Montassir. Jude e Claude com o tempo divorciaram-se. Seu filho morreu aos oito anos em acidente de moto. Jude tem vivido em vários países e em vários lugares dos Estados Unidos. Atualmente vive em Carolina do Norte e tem também uma casa na Itália. É conhecida sobretudo por romances ambientados na época medieval, com fortes heroínas. Também tem escrito obras ambientadas na América pós-Revolucionária, e no século XIX, tanto Colorado como Novo México. Tem escrito várias histórias de viagens no tempo.
