O poema épico Beowul retoma a trajetória de um heroi mítico que teria salvo os dinamarqueses de dois monstros antes de sucumbir numa contra um dragão.

A história escrita no fim do primeiro milênio não é apenas mais um conto do Homem contra os horrores de um mundo que se julgava irracional. É também um relato da sobrevivência após batalhas e como esses guerreiros se adaptavam ou não à paz.

No caso de Beowulf, nenhuma morte seria aceita que não a mais gloriosa.
