After its sold-out Chicago premiere, the play has electrified audiences in New York since its opening in November 2007.

Tracy Letts is the author of Killer Joe, Bug, and Man from Nebraska, which was a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. His plays have been performed throughout the country and internationally. A performer as well as a playwright, Letts is a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where August: Osage County premiered.

Geralmente encontro dificuldade para acompanhar a leitura de peças teatrais, mas talvez por já ter assistido a adaptação cinematográfica desse texto de Tracy Letts, a compreensão se deu mais facilmente. Osage County é a velha radiografia da vida de aparências levada a ferro e fogo pela pequena burguesia americana (ou de qualquer país, verdade seja dita).
Ao longo de três atos que se estendem por mais de três horas, Letts conta, com minúcia de detalhes, as agruras da família Weston, obrigada a se reunir por conta do desaparecimento de seu patriarca, o cultuado e arruinado poeta Beverly. Com a chegada de todos os parentes às escaldantes planícies de Oklahoma, a instável e viciada Violet, mãe de três filhas que também vivem seus dramas, dá início a uma série de discussões ácidas e trágicas que foram evitadas por anos.
Osage County é certamente menos intensa que Bug ou Killer Joe, mas a complexidade da escrita de Letts, e sua habilidade de colocar uma dúzia de personagens interagindo, se provocando, habitando um mesmo espaço de maneira tão cruel quanto divertida é um trunfo por si só, talvez até com mais mérito que nos outros trabalhos.
