Hard Times takes place in Coketown, a town of factories, great machines and tall chimneys. Life means work to the people who live there, not rest - life means fact, fact, fact. And the ugliest fact about Coketown is the town itself. Mr Gradgrind, the owner of the school, believes in fact alone - 'you must forget the word fancy' - and brings up his children on this belief. But Life has a few lessons of its own to teach Gradgrind and his 'self-made' friend Bounderby; and these lessons come from an unexpected source...
