Who was Vincent Van Gogh? Where did he live and work? What happened when he was ill and why are there six versions of his masterpiece Sunflowers? This book answers all these questions in brief. Taking Vincent's life story as its fundation, the reader is guided through the most beautiful paintings in the Van Gogh Museum collection: from the powerful, dark Potato Eaters, to the colorful masterpieces such as The yellow house and Almond Blossom, and the striking landscapes he painted during the last days of his life in Auvers-sur-Olse. Key themes, like the Japanese influence in his work, his illness and his religion are examined. There is also information on how the Van Gogh museum collection came into being, and how it was expanded with works by Van Gogh's contemporaries, such as Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, Georges Seurat and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. These works are presented in the context of Van Gogh's life and art, and complete the picutre of the artist.
