Esse romance é aquele tipo de obra que fez muito sucesso na época do lançamento, mas que perdeu relevância ao longo do tempo. Ainda tem seus méritos. É uma crônica vívida da Manhattan dos anos 80, com gente branca, metida a chique e alienada, movida a cocaina e drinques, circurlando em desfiles de moda, galerias de arte, boates e festas. A voz narrativa ácida é o grande charme aqui. Só que perde força nos capítulos finais, caindo no melodrama. A abertura do livro é uma das mais marcante da literatura americana.
