O livro conta a história de Elijah, um adolescente judeu que idolatra seu avô postiço, Poxl West. Poxl teve um papel fundamental durante seu processo de amadurecimento, ele levava o menino a museus, teatros, óperas e, no fim do dia, lia para ele partes da biografia que estava escrevendo. Nela ele reconta seus dias como piloto da Força Aérea Real Britânica durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Elijah vê em seu "tio" o herói judeu que tanto anseia, o modelo de conduta que ele sempre quis ver nos livros de história. Um judeu, que depois de perder pessoas amadas para os nazistas, resolve se vingar e entrar na guerra para devolver o troco.
A história se alterna entre o ponto de vista do Elijah de 2015, refletindo sobre os acontecimentos e fatos do Elijah de 1986, e trechos da biografia que retomam a jornada de Poxl West desde sua vida familiar em Leitmeritz, sua partida para Rotterdam no princípio da Guerra e sua jornada até a RAF em Londres.
É um livro com apelo emocional muito grande, e o estilo narrativo de Torday torna as perdas dos personagens muito mais difíceis para o leitor. Enquanto lia as páginas, sentia como se Elijah e Poxl estivessem aqui comigo, contando suas experiências, alegrias e dores. É um livro incrível que merece ser descoberto por mais pessoas.
