As yet Magdalena had borne her sorrow like a heroine; but the unexpected shriek of Eugene, the heart-piercing hopeless tone in which he pronounced the words of forever! was more than her fortitude could bear. while Rudiger (whom the page's cry of agony had also roused from his gloomy meditations) sprang forward with a furious look, and plunged into the grave. With involuntary horror the friars started back, and then as if changed to stone by a Gorgon's head.... '.'

Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775-1818) was a British author. From Westminster School, he passed to Christ Church, Oxford. Already he was busy over tales and plays, and wrote at college a farce, never acted, a comedy, The East Indian, and also a novel, never published, called The Effusions of Sensibility, which was a burlesque upon the sentimental school. He wrote also what he called "a romance in the style of The Castle of Otranto, " which appeared afterwards as the play of The Castle Spectre (1796). His father's desire was to train him for the diplomatic service, and in the summer of 1794 he went to the Hague as attache to the British Embassy. He had begun to write his novel The Monk: A Romance (1796), but was spurred on at the Hague by a reading of Mrs. Radcliffe's Mysteries of Udolpho, a book after his own heart. His other works include: The Bravo of Venice: A Romance (1804).

A versão gótica de "Romeu e Julieta"

Publicado originalmente em 1808, como parte da coleção "Romantic Tales", "Mistrust; Or, Blanche and Osbright" é uma novela de Matthew Gregory Lewis, o autor de nada menos do que a obra-prima do horror gótico "O Monge" (meu livro favorito da vida e que vai ganhar uma edição de luxo, recheada de extras, pelas editoras Clepsidra e Aetia). No Brasil, foi publicada em 1971 como "Suspeita", pela editora Bruguera na coleção Trevo Negro, com tradução de Rebecca Naslausky.

A história acompanha o jovem Osbright de Frankheim, descrito como um guerreiro destemido que, após lutar bravamente em uma guerra, viaja de volta para o castelo de sua familia. Enquanto acompanha o nosso herói cavalgando velozmente pela floresta, o leitor já se depara com vários mistérios instigantes: na verdade, Osbright não está indo para sua casa, ele para e observa à distância o castelo de alguém declarado por ele como "inimigo". Quem habita esse lugar? Ele então adentra uma caverna nas montanhas e encontra um objeto esperado por ele. Quem deixou ali? Logo depois, ele ouve o badalar de sinos na floresta e percebe que vem dá capela de seu lar. Ao se aproximar, ele observa seus pais e um grande séquito em torno de um túmulo. Quem morreu?

É a partir desses mistérios apresentados logo no 1° capítulo que Matthews Lewis começará a tecer uma grande teia de segredos, mentiras, conspirações, assassinatos e amores proibidos entre suas famílias rivais. Mas, existe um lado certo nessa história? Ou há mais alguém interessado nessa guerra iminente?

"Suspeita" poderia ser descrito como uma versão gótica de "Romeu e Julieta", talvez ainda mais trágica e com um pequeno toque de sobrenatural. É uma leitura fluida e viciante para quem adora romances góticos e medievais.

Infelizmente, assim como outros títulos da coleção Trevo Negro, "Suspeita" é um livro raro e dificílimo de achar (agradeço ao Cid Vale, do Sebo Clepsidra, pela dica preciosa que garantiu o meu exemplar).
