Dick's classic novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Here, Jeter casts doubt on the identity of just about every character who appeared in either the film or the previous sequel, The Edge of Human (1995). The action opens in the orbital studio Outer Hollywood, where a video is being made of Rick Deckard's original pursuit of the rogue replicants, with Deckard acting as technical advisor. Jeter (Kevin Wayne Jeter) is an American author of gothic science fiction and horror stories, best known for his literary writing style, dark themes, and paranoid, unsympathetic characters. In addition to original fiction, Jeter has written a number of novelisations in the Star Trek and Star Wars (and other fictional universes) and has written three sequels to the Blade Runner film, which was based on Philip K. Dick's novel 'Do androids dream of electric sheep? '.'

Apesar da má recepção quando lançado em 1982, no anos 90 o filme Blade Runner foi revisitado e se transformou em um clássico, assim como o livro Andróides Sonham Com Ovelhas Elétricas? que o inspirou, gerando a pergunta: haveria uma sequência? No cinema, isso só aconteceria em 2017, mas nos livros a sonhada continuação chegou já em 1995.

Blade Runner 2 - A Fronteira do Humano se passa em 2020. Deckard ainda não sabe se é humano ou um dos replicantes, seres cuja origem é explorada de maneira um pouco diferente da história original: não seriam fabricados do zero, mas uma espécie de clones tecnológicos e aperfeiçoados com base em protótipos humanos pré-existentes.

Apesar da dissonância, isso possibilitou o retorno dos replicantes do filme para a história e é coerente com a época do lançamento do livro: experiências genéticas eram assunto dominante nos anos 90 na ficção - em filmes como GATTACA - e na realidade, quando o mundo assistiu a primeira clonagem de um mamífero a partir de uma célula adulta: a ovelha Dolly.

Outro ponto positivo é que o livro resgata também os personagens John Isidore (que está em Andróides Sonham... mas não está no filme) e J. F. Sebastian (que está em Blade Runner, mas não existe no livro original).

Essa sequência não foi escrita por Philip K. Dick, falecido antes mesmo da estréia do filme, mas por K. W. Jeter, que curiosamente foi amigo pessoal de Philip em vida e inspirou um dos personagens do seu livro VALIS. Blade Runner 2 - A Fronteira do Humano não é nenhuma maravilha, mas está longe de ser ruim.
