O livro traz a história de Ethan, aparentemente o mais calmo e sereno dos irmãos, mas que, em minha opinião, enfrenta dia após dia o passado mais doloroso de todos. Ele e Seth se identificam por partilharem de traumas que levarão para sempre. Ethan lida com a recente perda do pai tentando continuar o negócio da família: construção de barcos, mas sua vida muda muito com a chegada do menino.

Ele tentava seguir a vida da melhor maneira que podia, tentando não se ater muito ao passado e reprimir os sentimentos que tinha por uma amiga de longa data por receio de arriscar a pedir muito de um destino que, até então, achava ter sido caridoso considerando tudo o que já tinha lhe acontecido. Ele descobrirá, na segunda parte desta jornada maravilhosa de descobertas e superação, que a felicidade apenas pode ser alcançada se lutarmos por ela, por mais difícil que pareça o caminho.
