O livro gira em torno da vida da Joanna, que fez a promessa ao pai de não falar nada sobre ser lésbica quando eles se mudam pra uma nova cidade. O que estava “tudo bem” por ela até conhecer Mary Carlson e se apaixonar.

Achei o núcleo familiar da Joanna bem legal. Primeiro o relacionamento dela com seu pai, que diz que a apoia, e realmente apoia na maior parte do tempo, mas que eventualmente percebe que o que ele pediu pra ela fazer foi injusto. Depois o relacionamento dela com a madrasta, que foi topíssimo. A evolução gradativa, a forma como ela passa a vê-la não como “a terceira esposa” do seu pai e sim como uma aliada e amiga. Amei.

Outra coisa que também gostei, é que não existiu crise com a fé. As duas personagens, mesmo sendo lésbicas, nunca duvidaram do que acreditavam. Houve dúvida quanto a como as outras pessoas reagem ou como iriam reagir, mas não existiu um “Será que Deus ainda me ama? Eu vou para o inferno”.

Agora o que eu não gostei… Não entendi o motivo de ela simplesmente não contar pra Mary Carlson que o pai havia pedido pra ela não “se assumir” por um ano. Quão ruim isso teria sido? Com certeza seria melhor do que continuar mentindo pra alguém que disse que odiava mentiras.

No geral, este foi um livro realmente bom e eu definitivamente recomendo. O que eu não recomendo é mentir pra alguém que você ama, como Joanna fez 🙊.
