Written in Russian, the manuscript of this book was begun in 1927 and revised by the author over a period of many years. The first English translation by A. R. Orage has been revised and reworked from the Russian for this publication.

Who was Gurdjieff?

George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff was born in 1877 in Alexandropol, near the Persian frontier of Russia, where the ancient traditions of patriarchal were still a living influence. After his family had suffered great losses and moved to Kars, his father’s friend, the dean of the Cathedral, took charge of the boy’s education and arranged for him to be trained both as a priest and a physician. While supporting himselv to persue this studies, Gurdjieff acquired unusual dexterity in many trades.

During the period which followed, lasting perhaps some twenty years, Gurdjieff “disappeared”. It is known only that he traveled in the remotest regions of central Asia and that these years were crucial in the moulding of his thought. Ouspensky quotes him as saying later: “I was not alone. There were all sorts of specialists among us. Afterwards when we forgathered we put together everything we had founds.”

In Meetings with Remarkable Men, Gurdjieff himself introduces us to some of his companions. With colorful episodes from their adventures, he brings to life the story of his own unremitting search for a real and universal knowledge. But although his narrative has the undeniable ring of authenticity, the sense of mystery surrounding the truths he discovered is left intact. Meeting with Remarkable Men can be read as a colorful narrative or psychological autobiography, but the meaning of its content can be best appreciated in relation to the expositions of Gurdjieff’s ideas, previously published in All and Everything, or Beelzebub’s Tells to His Grandson.

Encontro com homens notáveis

A partir de um vídeo no youtube criado a partir da música hallelujah de Leonard Cohen (https://youtu.be/DnR_7Zdw70o) tomei conhecimento das cenas do Filme "Meetings with Remarkable Men (1979)" e fiquei encantado com a precisão e a harmonia dos movimentos da dança retratada no filme, e mais tarde (após assitir o filme) pela história e as aventuras narradas por George Ivanovich Gurdjieff.

Apesar disso só viria a descobri que também existe um livro com o mesmo título do filme muito tempo depois e não pude deixar de lê-lo. Os relatos sobre as inúmeras culturas que habitam a europa oriental, ásia e oriente médio, bem como seus estilos de vidas peculiares e sua sabedoria desenvolvida sobre um eixo diferente do modo de pensar ocidental, me fizeram viajar àquelas regiões e ascederam em mim uma curiosidade que me consumiram horas de pesquisas na internet.

No livro o autor relata os principais personagens, homens e mulheres, que marcaram a sua vida de forma profunda e que ajudaram a contruir sua personalidade e alcançar seus objetivos pessoais. Boa parte da narrativa é construída em torno de viagens à áfrica e ao oriente médio a partir de um grupo de cientistas, engenheiros, pesquisadores e curiosos que se auto-intulavam como "buscadores da verdade" e que faziam escavações em busca de antigas civilizações, bem como a procura de homens sábios que pudessem responder perguntas que intrigavam a cada um deles.

Os relatos são muito bem detalhados é possível entrar em contato com variados tipos de povos, culturas, hábitos, paisagens, além de histórias fantásticas, as vezes engraçadas, e de muita superação.

Este livro me abriu uma compreensão maior da nossa diversidade cultural quanto seres humanos, e me acendeu uma curiosidade sobre outros tipos de civilizações não ocidentais. Não descarto uma viagem percorrendo toda a antiga Rota da seda e quem sabe visitando algumas das cidades citadas na obra de Gurdjieff.
