Frankenstein-Mary Shelley

Frankenstein é uma obra muito diferente do esperado. Não é terror, é uma história sobre humanidade, sobre as consequências da ambição e de alterar a ordem da natureza. Escrito na época do Iluminismo, onde vários avanços na ciência aconteciam e nada parecia fora do alcance, Mary Shelley mostra que há coisas que melhor permanecem desconhecidas, e que a ignorância por vezes é uma benção:
“Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge, and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow.”
“If our impulses were confined to hunger, thirst, and desire, we might be nearly free; but now we are moved by every wind that blows, and a chance word or scene that that word may convey to us”
As duas falas de Victor Frankenstein mostram seu arrependimento.
O paralelo Frankenstein-criatura:
Frankenstein e sua criatura são muito semelhantes um ao outro. Os dois não conheciam a angústia, mas depois de todos os acontecimentos passam a viver nela, corrompidos pelas tragédias que tomam lugar na trama. Frankenstein sofre pelas diversas perdas e principalmente pela culpa, pois se considerava responsável pelas mortes causadas pela sua criatura, a quem desprezava e chamava de filthy daemon, fiend, wreched, etc. Ele passou tanto tempo dedicado a criação daquele ser, se afastando de familiares:
“If the study to which you apply yourself has a tendency to weaken your affections, and to destroy your taste for those simple pleasures in which no alloy can possibly mix, then that study is certainly unlawful, that is to say, not befitting the human mind.”- Elizabeth
E quando finalmente atingiu seu objetivo, ficou horrorizado com sua criação, abandonou-o, e quando as mortes aconteceram, temos trechos e trechos narrando com clareza o pior dos sentimentos:
“Anguish and despair had penetrated into the core of my heart; I bore a hell within me, which nothing could extinguish.”
“none ever conceived of the misery that I then endured.”
“I, not in deed, but in effect, was the true murderer.”
Agora falando da criatura: inicialmente era desprovida de qualquer instinto maligno, mas devido à negligência, ou melhor, horror, nojo e repulsa que os seres humanos sentiam em relação a ela, a ingenuidade foi perdida, e o “monstro” foi corrompido. O que nos leva a refletir “Was Frankenstein really the monster?”
“Life, although it may only be an accumulation of anguish, is dear to me, and I will defend it.”
“I was benevolent; my soul glowed with love and humanity”
“miserable[..] from the barbarity of man”
“For a long time I could not conceive how one man could go forth to murder his fellow”
“Oh, that I had for ever remained in my native wood, no known or felt beyond the sensations of hunger, thirst, and heat!”
“Satan had his companions, fellow-devils, to admire and encourage him; but I am solitary and detested”
A criatura era boa, mas só recebeu ódio dos seres humanos, e ansiava por alguém que a tratasse diferente, pois era o único ser que não tinha ninguém. Até o diabo, como ele diz, tinha companheiros, e ele não. Como ele poderia continuar com a bondade e ingenuidade iniciais se o meio o corrompeu? Quando fez suas vítimas, disse que era uma tortura, e que seu coração se enchia de remorso. Por que ele fazia aquilo? Para possivelmente conseguir que Frankenstein mudasse de ideia em ralação à promessa, para se vingar, ou era um ato de desespero?
Então o mostro era Frankenstein, seu criador, que o deu vida para depois o abandonar, dar falsas esperanças e quebrar a sua promessa? Frankenstein foi injusto com sua criatura, não pensou nas consequências de suas ações, mas também sofreu de males com o arrependimento, angústia, e sentiu empatia por sua criatura. No seu leito de morte falou que nenhum sentimento de vingança permanecia, mas que não se arrependia de sua busca por ela.
Frankenstein e sua criatura eram ambos em parte vítima, em parte monstro. A criatura vítima dos seres humanos. E o criador, vítima da sua consciência.
É possível notar bastantes críticas de Mary Shelley. Críticas à Igreja e à intolerância religiosa, como na parte em que pressionam Justine a assinar sua confissão, mesmo sendo inocente, ou será condenada ao fogo do inferno, bem como na parte em que o pai de Safie é preso não por seus atos, mas por sua religião.
Também ao Reign of Terror, que teve fim apenas 3 anos antes de seu nascimento.

“When one creature is murdered, another is immediately deprived of life in a slow torturing manner; then the executioners, their hands yet reeking with the blood of innocence, believe that they have done a great deed.
