Kami cresceu fora de Washington DC, usava muito preto, e passava horas escrevendo poesia em cadernos espirais. Como uma menina de raízes do sul, ela sempre foi fascinada pela paranormalidade e acredita em muitas coisas "anormais" que as pessoas não fazem. Ela é muito supersticiosa e nunca dormi em um quarto com o número "13" na porta. Quando ela não está escrevendo, Kami geralmente pode ser encontrada assistindo filmes de desastres, ouvindo Soundgarden, ou bebendo Diet Coke. Kami tem mestrado em educação, e ensinou na área de Washington DC, até que ela se mudou para Los Angeles, onde ela era professora e especialista em leitura por 14 anos. Além de ensinar, Kami era um artista profissional e grupos liderados de livros de fantasias para crianças e adolescentes.
