O início do livro é interessante, falando dos fenícios e da fundação de Cartago até o caminho para a Primeira Guerra Púnica. Infelizmente o autor se perde muito falando dos mitos e crenças dos cartagineses, citando Hércules literalmente 255 vezes ao longo livro, e quando chega o momento de falar de batalhas importantes como Canas e Zama só são dedicados alguns parágrafos. Ainda que não se trate de um livro de história militar, não houve o merecido destaque para a relevância e consequências de alguns pontos importantes dos confrontos entre Cartago e Roma.
