É o primeiro registro escrito do Japão, parte do qual é considerado um texto sagrado da religião xintoísta. O texto Kojiki foi compilado a partir da tradição oral em 712.

Um importante livro de referência para cerimônias, costumes, adivinhação e práticas mágicas do Japão antigo, que inclui mitos, lendas e relatos históricos da corte imperial desde os primeiros dias de sua criação até o reinado da Imperatriz Suiko (628). Muito do pensamento xintoísta é baseado em interpretações da mitologia contida no Kojiki. Foi escrito usando caracteres chineses para representar sons japoneses, visto que nenhum meio de registrar a língua falada em desenvolvimento do Japão ainda havia sido inventado. Os valores religiosos e éticos do Kojiki foram redescobertos e reavaliados por Moto-ori Norinaga (1730–1801), que escreveu a “Anotação do Kojiki” completa em 49 volumes.
