Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood—where even greater pain awaits. é brutal e sincero, retrata os milhares de abusos aos quais os negros eram submetidos nos EUA durante a escravidão. Cora - jovem escravizada - é convidada por Caesar a fugir pela ferrovia subterrânea que os levaria até os Estados Livres, onde não há mais escravidão. em sua fuga, Cora passa pela Geórgia, Carolina do Sul, Carolina do Norte, Indiana e Tennessee, sonhando com uma vida livre e digna, que parece impossível para qualquer negro que vive nos Estados Unidos, nascido escravizado ou não.
