Sarah is insane. She can't talk properly, communicating by means of appropriate quotes from Shakespeare, the Bible, and so on. She also talks to walls, rubber dragons, and other inanimate objects. What no one else knows is that the inanimate answers her back. When budget cuts force her mental institution to kick her out, she is adopted by a street gang ruled by Head Wolf, a sometimes brutal man who may be insane too. But soon the mental institution wants Sarah back for sinister reasons. Championed by the hacker Abalone, assisted by other members of the Pack, and with advices from her talking toy dragon, Sarah goes into hiding, but that may not be enough to preserve her freedom - or her life. Brother To Dragons, Companion To Owls has all the trappings of a cyberpunk novel: certifiably insane characters, a ruthless society of street refugees, Evil Corporate Conspiracies, and bizarre methods of code-breaking. But Sarah's viewpoint gives it a fairy-tale atmosphere that prevents it from becoming grim or sordid - and the running commentary from her dragon is lighthearted and amusing.
