"Deenie" by Judy Blume is one of those books that stays with you, no matter what age you read it. At least, that's how it was for me. Deenie's story is, at first glance, about scoliosis and her journey to cope with a back brace. But, in reality, it's so much deeper than that. Blume has an incredible sensitivity for portraying adolescence in its rawest, most real form. You feel Deenie's frustration, her shame, her envy of her sister, her insecurity about the future, and her first crushes. It's an honest dive into the insecurities and discoveries of this turbulent phase of life. What captivated me about "Deenie" is the way the author addresses acceptance and self-discovery. It's not a fairy tale where everything is magically resolved. Deenie has her ups and downs, her moments of anger and conformity. And it's precisely this reality and vulnerability that make the character so easy to relate to.
