This book offers a modern approach to the languages of the 1990's. Seven different languages are presented: LISP, APL, Scheme, SASL, CLU, Smalltalk and Prolog. Each of these programming languages is presented in a simplified form and has an interpreter, written in Pascal. By describing the semantics of a language in terms of its interpreter, this book provides the reader with a concrete language model. The complete Pascal code for each interpreter is contained in the appendices. The coverage of each language includes a general introduction, the language's history and influence, a discussion of its basic ideas including syntax and semantics, many programming examples, and aspects of the language as it is in "real life". Through this presentation the reader will gain an understanding and appreciation of a wide range of programming languages and styles. Key features include: - In depth discussion of the principal modern programming paradigms: functional, object-oriented, and logic. - Uniform presentation of language semantics. - Coverage of memory management and compilation of functional languages.
