Com um estilo narrativo que remete aos contos de fada, esse livro traz uma recontagem de Morozko - ou Pai Gelo - um personagem do folclore russo.

Neste, uma mulher fria e gananciosa decide enviar sua enteada para a morte certa ao oferecê-la como noiva de Morozko. Contudo, a humildade da menina faz com que o mesmo a poupe e lhe dê riquezas que ao serem vistas por sua madrasta, fazem com que esta resolva enviar a própria filha. A menina termina sendo morta por sua arrogância.

Parece familiar? Então acrescente a ideia de Arden de oferecer presentes a uma menina chamada Vasya que tem a família chantageada com a morte de um dos filhos caso haja algum tipo de traição.

Mais Bela e a Fera impossível.

No tocante a escrita, a primeira parte é a melhor por sua mistura de conto moral com uma boa dose de descrição. O resto, porém, perde-se entre detalhes supérfluos e acontecimentos solapados.
