If you have not read anything about the Baudelaire orphans, then before you read even one more sentence, you should know this: Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are kindhearted and quick-witted, but their lives, I am sorry to say, are filled with bad luck and misery. All of the stories about these three children are unhappy and wretched, and this one may be the worst of them all. If you haven't got the stomach for a story that includes a hurricane, a signalling device, hungry leeches, cold cucumber soup, a horrible villain, and a doll named Pretty Penny, then this book will probably fill you with despair. I will continue to record these tragic tales, for that is what I do. You, however, should decide for yourself whether you can possibly endure this miserable story.

"They were so relieved that something had finally gone right that they laughed as if they were at the circus instead of in the middle of a lake, in the middle of a hurricane, in the middle of trouble."

Gostei demais da ambientação dessa história. Os cenários e situações um tanto quanto surreais (além de me agradarem bastante esteticamente) criam um certo suspense, pois são tantas coisas perigosas no mesmo lugar que não parece nada improvável um desastre (ou mais de um, por que não?) acontecer a qualquer momento.

Há várias situações engraçadas e - ao mesmo tempo - bastante tristes, outra coisa que eu tenho gostado bastante dessa série no geral: a forma com que drama e comédia coexistem de uma maneira que me faz rir ao mesmo tempo que me traz um leve sentimento de culpa, como se eu estivesse prestes a dar risada em um enterro. É uma sensação incômoda na vida real mas que, por algum motivo, costumo gostar muito de sentir quando estou lendo.
