Now published for the very first time in English, Stephan Wul's Fantastic Planet (Oms En Série) is a classic of Science Fiction and the inspiration for the award-winning 1973 animated film La Planète Sauvage (Fantastic Planet). The last surviving humans are taken from Earth to the wild planet Ygam by the Draags, a race of blue-skinned, red-eyed giants. Here they become known as oms, used as lowly servants and regarded as savages. But little by little, led by a young man of superior intelligence named Terr, the oms regain their thirst for liberty and rise up against the draags to affirm their humanity in the face of oppression. This deceptively simple story-line is vividly depicted by author Stefan Wul with fantastic detail and a stirring mythopoeic resonance. The animated feature film "Fantastic Planet" - with René Laloux and Roland Topor's adaptation - won the Grand Prix at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival and remains a mind-bendingly entertaining touchstone of counterculture art; at last, English-language readers can enjoy the classic Sci-Fi novel that it was based on. ==== https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0070544/ https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0070544/trivia?ref_=m_tt_trv_trv Adapted from the sci-fi novel "Oms en série" by Pierre Pairault (under the pseudonym Stefan Wul). Although the film follows the book's basic premise more or less faithfully, there are significant differences. The movie places great emphasis on the Draags' meditation ceremonies, making them a vital part of the climax as the Oms threaten to disrupt them, which would doom the Draags to extinction. The book doesn't touch on this subject at all, and the climax involves an actual weaponized conflict between the two species. The film ends with the Oms moving to an artificial moon, while in the book, they settle on an uninhabited island. . . Included among the "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die", edited by Steven Schneider. ==== [About the Author]: Stefan Wul was the nom de plume of French science fiction writer Pierre Pairault (1922-2003). He was a dental surgeon, but science fiction was his real passion. Most of his books reflect that, showing a deep knowledge of scientific data. Pairault retired from dental surgery in 1989, but remained active in the French science fiction scene. He published eleven novels between 1956 and 1959, and a twelfth in 1977.
