Whenever another kid goes missing in October, the Pender kids know what is really behind it: a horrific monster out in the marshes they have named the Mumbler. That’s what Clara’s new crew tells her when she moves to town: Bree and Sage, who take her under their wing; spirited Trace, who has taken the lead on this year’s Halloween prank war; and magnetic Kincaid, whose devil-may-care attitude and air of mystery are impossible for Clara to resist. Clara doesn’t actually believe in the Mumbler. But as Halloween gets closer and tensions build in the town, it’s hard to shake the feeling that there really is something dark and dangerous in Pender, lurking in the shadows, waiting to bring the stories to life.

    Gillian French

Gillian French is the author of three novels for teens: GRIT (HarperTeen, 5/16/2017), THE DOOR TO JANUARY (Islandport Press, 9/5/2017), and THE SUMMER BOYS (HarperTeen, 5/2/2018). Her short fiction has appeared in Odd Tree Press Quarterly, EMP Publishing's anthology Creepy Campfire Stories (for Grownups): Tales of Extreme Horror, Sanitarium Magazine, and The Realm Beyond. She holds a BA in English from the University of Maine, and lives in her native state of Maine with her husband and sons, where she's perpetually at work on her next novel. I write books for young adults and anyone else who wants to read them. I’ve been lucky enough to always know exactly what I want to do with my life: tell stories, preferably ones with a dark or creepy twist. It’s my passion, what’s kept me pounding the keys these past seventeen years even after receiving enough rejection letters to wallpaper my house ten times over. In HarperTeen and Islandport, I’ve found publishers who share my enthusiasm for an engrossing tale, and I’m excited to finally realize my dream of becoming a published novelist for teens and adults. My YA realistic contemporary debut GRIT is due from HarperTeen 5/16/2017, and my YA paranormal novel THE DOOR TO JANUARY is due from Islandport Press 9/5/2017. My short fiction has appeared in Odd Tree Press Quarterly #1, EMP Publishing’s anthology Creepy Campfire Stories (for Grownups): Tales of Extreme Horror, Sanitarium Magazine, and The Realm Beyond. My contest wins include Second Place in the Genre Short Story category of the 2013 Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition, First Place in the Horror category of the 2012 Writer’s Digest Popular Fiction Awards Competition, and Third Prize in the 2012 Zoetrope: All-Story Short Fiction Contest. I hold a BA in English from the University of Maine, and live in rural Maine with my husband Darren and our son Jeremy. I’m perpetually at work on my next novel.
