"Almaty-Transit" is an offbeat ghost story set in contemporary Los Angeles, California and Almaty, Kazakhstan and traces the journey of an American jazz producer and her Kazakh husband through a grotesque and tragic landscape of love and death. The tale conjures the temperament of Chuck Palahniuk’s “Lullaby,” the magic realist family saga of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” and the blend of the mundane and fantastic of Haruki Murakami’s “Kafka on the Shore.” It is narrated from multiple characters’ points of view, only to demonstrate that the truth is a very private matter.
