Joseph Pearce aborda o significado cristão presente em O Senhor dos Anéis. Ele fala de cada um dos aspectos da história e como se entrelaçam com eventos do cristianismo.

"There is a mystery at the heart of The Lord of the Rings that continues to baffle and confuse the critics. Is it “a fundamentally religious and Catholic work,” as Tolkien claimed in a letter to his Jesuit friend, Father Robert Murray, in December 1953, or is it, as he claimed in the foreword to the second edition of The Lord of the Rings, devoid of any intentional meaning or “message”?"

Peguei esse livro só por mera curiosidade e o que tenho a dizer é que, enquanto apresenta bons insights sobre O Senhor dos Anéis, não se difere muito de outros livros que analisam a obra de Tolkien sob a ótica cristã; mas enquanto o tema é mesmo, alguns autores conseguem abordar de uma nova forma.
Joseph Pearce começa falando de alegorias, algo que Tolkien não gostava, e como O Senhor dos Anéis é e ao mesmo tempo não é uma alegoria (se baseando nas cartas do autor), e eu achei interessante essa abordagem, mas a leitura começou a arrastar quando vi que o autor passa o resto do livro falando sobre isso. Ele aponta a contradição entre O Senhor dos Anéis ser uma obra fundamentalmente cristã (nas palavras do próprio autor), enquanto também está “desprovido de qualquer significado intencional ou mensagem”, e a partir daí, é como se quisesse provar que a história é sim uma alegoria.
Ficou cansativo de ler mais para o fim, mas como não gosto de deixar uma leitura inacabada... Se quiser um livro somente por buscar um novo ponto de vista sobre o assunto “Tolkien e cristianismo”, recomendo que leia, caso contrário...
