The Mad Ship that got me mad
Soooooo... what to say about this book? I sincerely have no idea. Here's the deal: I had read 'Ship of Magic', the first book of the trilogy, in 2019, when I was discovering my love for the high fantasy genre. I definitely loved the book, in a way I hadn't done in ages, or even never before. I read it in Portuguese, my mother language, and awaited anxiously for the second book to be published. And happened was that the publisher that brought Robin's books to Brazil gave the rights of publishing to another publisher, that promised to publish by first the Farseer Trilogy and then publish the Liveship Traders. By then, I knew I would have to wait more than I had already, but I thought it would he worth it. So I waited, and waited and waited... and they didn't even publish the second book in the Farseer. Then, I got worried. I had to read the book, I loved it, and suddenly I couldn't wait. So, this year, as I uttered for a good book, I reread 'Ship of Magic'. And, dear, what an experience! I reread with energy and wilfulness, and I got again marvelled by the story, and characters, the world... And then I bought Mad Ship in english. By that point, I didn't care about the fear of not understanding much of the story, I needed to try... it would be worth it. And, it turned out to be the best thing to do. I am certain that I could get at least 98% of the story. Robin's writing is heavy, is full of metaphors, comparisons, detail and insights on the characters feelings and thoughts, which she does manage really well throughout the narrative. The characters, again, marvelously developed, I really believed this book to have a more rapid rhythm, but I was wrong. However, this doesn't at all disqualify the book in any sense. It is slow, but takes its time to develope all characters and the Liveships (THE LIVESHIPS!!! I love them) and the word expands even more once we travel into the Satrap's inner circle and discover more on the serpents, the Rain Wilds and the mystery of the Liveships. My paperback edition is 850 pages long and every single one of them is perfectly written. I am really happy I had such a great experience with one of Robin's books in an english text, and it opens a lot of doors for me to travel through more stories that haven't been brought to Brazil yet. Talking on characters, I must say I loved Ronica, Keffria and Malta POV's, Malta really got me interested on her way of seeing the world and Ronica, as always, was the best. Keffria, although, didn't conquer me much, but I still like her. Wintrow had a really interesting plotline, the way he manages to be between Vivacia and Kennit made me look with other glaze to him. Kennit was also pretty interesting, just like in 'Ship of Magic', but now I believe I'm coming close to the answers I seek. As always, Robb catches me with her words and characters, and I urge to read the last book in the trilogy and reading the Tawny Man Trilogy. I hope one day I'll get there. 5 stars seem enough to me, don't you think? Thanks for reading and see you next review!
