Marryat began writing after a distinguished career in the British Navy. His time and personal experience in the Navy enhance his stories. A young English boy grows up alone on a desert island except for the companionship of the man who murdered his father. Jackson hates the boy and is cruel to him, which eventually brings out the animal instincts in the boy.
