Robert Fordyce Aickman
Robert Aickman (1914-1981) era filho de um arquiteto e neto do romancista gótico vitoriano Richard Marsh (autor do best-seller ocultista The Beetle). Não frequentou a universidade e subsistiu de uma pequena renda familiar em Londres, trabalhando como agente literário, editor e crítico de teatro e arte. Um proeminente defensor da preservação e restauração da extensa rede de canais da Inglaterra, ele foi co-fundador, em 1946, da influente Inland Waterways Association (Associação de Hidrovias Interiores) no Reino Unido. Acima de tudo, Aickman queria ser um autor, e ele realizou esse desejo com uma extensa obra de contos quase sobrenaturais. Além de oito coleções de “histórias estranhas”, como ele as apelidou (a primeira, We Are For the Dark, incluiu histórias escritas pela romancista Elizabeth Jane Howard), sua escrita inclui um pequeno romance, The Late Breakfasters (1965), uma novela publicada postumamente, The Model (1987), e vários trabalhos inéditos de ficção, drama e não-ficção. Ele publicou duas memórias, The Attempted Rescue e The River Runs Uphill, e dois livros populares de não-ficção sobre as hidrovias interiores. Aickman ganhou o World Fantasy Award em 1975 por sua história “Páginas do jornal de uma jovem garota” e editou oito volumes do livro The Fontana Book of Great Ghost Stories, escrevendo introduções para seis. Ele morreu de câncer em 1981.
