River Bend, Michigan, is the kind of small town most can’t imagine leaving, but three women couldn’t wait to escape. When each must return—Linda Williams, never sure what she wants; her mother, Paula, always too sure; and Beth DeWitt, one of River Bend’s only black daughters, now a mother of two who’d planned to raise her own children anywhere else—their paths collide under Beth’s father’s roof. As one town struggles to contain all of their love affairs and secrets, a local scandal forces Beth to confront her own devastating past. Filled with the voices of mothers and daughters, husbands, lovers, and fathers, The House of Deep Water explores motherhood, trauma, love, loss, and new beginnings found in a most unlikely place: home.

Ver maisO livro "The House of Deep Water" é muito profundo e com personagens extremamente bem construídos. // The book "The House of Deep Water" is very deep (no jokes about the book name!) and has very well developed characters. According to the back cover of the book, it tells the story of three women that learn the meaning of 'coming back home', but truly the book is much more than a physical return to their old city, but a search for new starts and obtaining closure. Linda, Paula and Elizabeth. Linda, recently divorced, in search of someone that could take care of her and be there for her. Her mom, Paula, that abandoned her daughters, husband and home, still young. And Elizabeth, a black woman, that is struggling with depression and has a lot of unresolved issues from abusive relationships that repeated over and over her life, reinforcing the idea of black women's loneliness. At the beggining of the book, you need to go back several times to the family tree presented in the first pages of the book, to understand how these women and people around them connect, because the book feels like a big family reunion, with many bonds between the different characters (some people may think that there are too many characthers in the book). Over time, you get use to this and find yourself really involved with the plot. Deep until the last chapter.
