Durante o teste de um escudo, a USS Enterprise é pega no meio de uma batalha Klingon/Romulana. Quando a tripulação da Enterprise resgata uma cápsula de escape, eles são confrontados por um Klingon que alega não saber nada de existência humana. Convencido de que o Klingon está falando a verdade, Capitão Kirk corre pro Quartel General da Frota Estelar em busca de respostas.
