Eddie Stratton told Chief inspector Morse that he'd gone up to Room 310of Randolph Hotel at about 5.20 p.m. But the door to the room had been shut, and when he'd knocked on it, his wife Laura had not replied. So he'd gone downstairs again to the hotel reception deck to get another key.
When he'd finally entered the room, Eddie had found his wife lying dead on the carpet. And he'd quickly noticed that her handbag was missing.
'Your wife was dead, but the first thing you thought about was her handbag?' asked Morse. 'That's rather strange, isn't it?'
'No, it isn't, Inspector,' replied Eddie. 'You see, there was something very valuable in that handbag.'
