The Scapegoat

They stood before the mirror. Jean, the Frenchman, and John, the Englishman. They were as alike as identical twins.
Amazed by the resemblance, they had dinner together in the small provincial town, and ate and talked and drank.
During the evening John was drugged. The Frenchman took his baggage and papers and left his double to assume the life he no longer wanted, the responsibilities he could no longer face.
The next morning Jihn awakened in a strange hotel with the clothes and identification papers of his "twin." While he was still puzzling over what had happened, a chauffeur arrived to take "Monsieur le Comte" back to his chateau.
John was no longer a professor in an English university. He was the Count de Gue!
