From New York Times #1 bestselling author Brandon Sanderson comes a detective thriller in a police beat like no other. Anthony Davis and his partner Chaz are the only real people in a city of 20 million, sent there by court order to find out what happened in the real world 10 days ago so that hidden evidence can be brought to light and located in the real city today. Within the re-created Snapshot of May 1st, Davis and Chaz are the ultimate authorities. Flashing their badges will get them past any obstruction and overrule any civil right of the dupes around them. But the crimes the detectives are sent to investigate seem like drudgery - until they stumble upon the grisly results of a mass killing that the precinct headquarters orders them not to investigate. That's one order they have to refuse. The hunt is on. And though the dupes in the replica city have no future once the Snapshot is turned off, that doesn't mean that both Davis and Chaz will walk out of it alive tonight.

    "We’re in a Snapshot."

"But the truth was, nobody seemed to know what to do with the Snapshots." "To the rest of the department they were errand boys, sent to retrieve specific data and nothing else." "Best way to catch someone is to not let them know they’re being chased." "In here, everyone else was fake, but he and Chaz . . . They were somehow something worse. Flaws in a perfect system. Intruders. Viruses leaving chaos in their wakes." "The city government of New Clipperton had bought the Snapshot Project. Paid the Restored American Union through the nose for it. But what did they know about how it worked? Barely anything. One of those . . . things was trapped somewhere, kept unconscious, electricity buzzing through it and doing this. Re-creating days, in their entirety, from provided raw matter." "You just aren’t willing to live, Davis,” Chaz said, stealing a fry. “Try new things, you know?" "In here, they were the only ones with rights. In here, they were gods." "As Chaz always said, things you did in the Snapshot didn’t really matter. . ." "When was the last time he’d just enjoyed life? He’d lost that skill, which seemed so natural to children. They didn’t have to work at having fun." "Everything that changes in here, everything different, happens because we cause it." “In here . . . I just, I can do things. I don’t worry as much. I’d like to be able to take that with me to the outside, you know? Or stay in here, let days pass, instead of switching the place off.”
