The author of Double Helix (2003),Werlin reinforces her reputation as a master of the YA thriller, pulling off a brilliant departure in this dark but hopeful tale, with pacing and suspense guaranteed to leave readers breathlessly turning the pages. The Rules of Survival é contada do ponto de vista de Matt, como se ele estivesse escrevendo uma carta pra irmã mais nova contando como foi a infância deles e dos grandes perigos que ele precisou salvá-la. Na verdade era um grande perigo só, a mãe deles, Nikki, uma pessoa completamente descontrolada e doentia.

Nikki torna a vida das crianças um inferno, levando homens pra dentro de casa, usando drogas na frente delas e tornando tudo o que puder o mais instável possível. Um dia ela está bem e os leva ao parque de diversões, enquanto em outros dias qualquer comentário é motivo pra serem castigados. E o pior é que como Nikki sempre fica no limite tênue entre ser uma mãe má e ser uma mãe louca, é difícil para Matt julgar o momento em que ele não aguenta mais. Até por que ele tem suas duas irmãs com quem se preocupar. E essa é uma das regras dele, "If you coped before, you can cope now".

O livro é bem, beeeem, paradão, mas é impossível não se identificar com a situação se você viveu alguma coisa sequer parecida em casa. Se você teve um pai ou uma mãe que não era exatamente normal e que fez da sua vida um inferno, com certeza você vai se identificar com "The Rules of Survival".
