M.W. Craven nasceu no condado de Cúmbria, no norte da Inglaterra, mas cresceu em Newcastle. Aos 16 anos, alistou-se no Exército «por acidente», decidindo depois viajar pelo mundo. Em 1995, formou-se em Serviço Social nas especialidades de criminologia e uso indevido de substâncias. Aos 30 anos regressou ao condado onde nasceu para ocupar o cargo de oficial de justiça, uma experiência que lhe viria a permitir transmitir um realismo sombrio à sua escrita. M.W.
