The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906) are world famous animal stories. Set in Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1890s, The Call of the Wild is about Buck, the magnificent cross-bred offspring of a St Bernard and a Scottish Collie. Stolen form his pampered life on a Californian estate and shipped to the Klondike to work as a sledge dog, he triumphs over his circumstances and becomes the leader of a wolf pack. The story records the 'decivilisation' of Buck as he answers 'the call of the wild', and inherent memory of primeval origins to which he instinctively responds. In contrast, White Fang relates the tale of a wolf born and bred in the wild which is civilised by the master he comes to truste and love.

The brutal world of the Klondike miners and their dogs is brilliantly evoked and Jack London's rendering of the sentient life of Buck and White Fang as they confront their destinyis enthralling and convincing. The deeper resonance of these stories derives from the author's use of the myth of the hero who survives by strength and courage, a powerful myth that still appeals to our collective unconscious.

O Bom e o Péssimo

The Call of the Wild é um ótimo conto. London o conta com uma precisão incrível, e uma verdade vivida claramente por ele. London deve ter visto vários Bucks, incluindo provavelmente seu próprio reflexo no espelho. É uma história autêntica e simples, mas densa, que mistura brutalidade e perceverança com a alegria selvagem da liberdade no extremo Norte.
Dito tudo isso, White Fang é uma grande, enorme e fedorenta porcaria. Morreu Jack London, o aventureiro com senso de justiça social, e nasceu Jack London metido a antropologo e o maior racista que eu já tive o desprazer de ler. Te-ne-bro-so. A história é longa, repetitiva, chatíssima e, principalmente, falsa até a última vírgula, e um grande exemplo de que escritores escrevem bem sobre o que eles sabem e sobre o que viveram. White Fang nasce ao contrário de The Call of the Wild, mas não apenas do quesito de direção dos personagem em relação à transição de domesticado para selvagem, mas também de uma história que nasce de Jack London, e uma história que nasce de fora dele. Uma que nasce como verdade e depois é por ele organizada em história, e a outra é uma história que tenta ser, porcamente, organizada em verdade. E o resultado é que uma funciona lindamente, e a outra dá vontade de jogar o livro fora e lavar os olhos.
