Merlin has a quest of his own, to find the Old World entity who used ordinary criminals to kill his mother. As he and his sister, the right-handed bookseller Vivien, tread in the path of a botched or covered-up police investigation from years past, they find this quest strangely overlaps with Susan’s. Who or what was her father? Susan, Merlin, and Vivien must find out, as the Old World erupts dangerously into the New.

A sensação de ler esse livro foi como ler Percy Jackson pela primeira vez. Uma aventura emocionante e mais ou menos simples, repleta de criaturas míticas e deuses. Os personagens são construídos de modo absolutamente incrível. Susan é a típica "escolhida" que não queria estar ali; mas diferente da maioria ela se adaptar rapidamente à situação e reage de modo realístico. Merlin e Vivien são de longe meus personagens favoritos, com suas brigas de irmãos, suas personalidades fortes e contrastantes e seu modo rápido de criar planos. Apesar disso, vários dos personagens secundários, como a Inspector Greene e a Merrihew, tem uma construção interessante e curiosa, que agrega à história. Foi um prazer devorar esse livro tão rápido, de um jeito que eu não fazia há muito tempo.
