In Scarborough, a low-income urban neighborhood, three kids struggle to rise above poverty, abuse, and a system that consistently fails them. The adults in their lives either rise to the occasion or fall by the wayside; together, they make up a troubled yet inspired community that refuses to be undone.

Heart-warming and heartbreaking at the same time

I love the characters in this book! Bing is my favorite, by far! But I also love how Marie is an amazing mom trying so hard to do what she can for her family. And Laura, such a kind little girl, who has such a hard life. And so many more. Even though the stories are mostly sad, there's love, compassion, company, empathy, so many heart-warming feelings to be felt. I haven't read a book like this in a while. It was also very interesting to know about the Scarborough community and all the cultural diversity there. Definitely enriched my view of the world. The only negative thing I have to say (and the reason this is not a 5-star rating) is that I got a little lost with all the characters a few times. A lot of the names only appear a couple times and I had to Google who was who when it got too confusing. That made me take a while to read this one. But still, I think it was totally worth it!
