The sickness struck everyone sixteen and older. First it twisted their minds; next it ravaged their bodies. Now the sickos roam the streets, crazed and hungry for young flesh. Ella's friends had told her that the country would be safer than the city. They were wrong. Now they're dead and Ella's all alone--alone, that is, except for her silent rescuer, Scarface. But she doesn't even know if he's a kid or a grown-up. Back in London, Ed is determined to find Ella and keep his promise to Small Sam that he will reunite sister and brother. But getting out of town has never been more dangerous. It seems that every sicko in the country is coming from all directions, almost as if they're being summoned to the capital. Will anything be able to stop the invading horde?

    "Kiss my axe."

This might be my favourite book of the series with just one left to read. It felt different from the others in terms of its structure. It was split into two parts following 3 main characters Ella and Malik then Ed. While previous books went from character to character within different areas of London after each chapter. I loved the beginning of the book and the bond between Ella and Malik, how they survived and how their friendship grew. Malik's story was extraordinary. Being left for dead and looking and turning into who he became and learning to stay alive was inspiring given his circumstances. The second half showed Ed and his small search team as they try Ella and bring her back to sam. But things are never that easy are they. Meeting elderly people along the gave you more information on the disease which is hard to come by in the series. We also were introduced to new characters and other groups of survivors even if tough they were psychopaths. In this book, Ed showed just how good of a leader he has become especially by the end of the book. The ending was amazing and crazy. "The Races" as the kids call them is like a game event where different groups of kids from five different areas compete in games and races against each other and sometimes while on horses. The crazy thing is that they use grown-ups in these games too and have gladiator-like battles like in the colosseum in Ancient Rome. This is when all the characters Ella, Malik, and Ed find each other in an exhilarating and emotional finale. The final book is set up for the final battle as about a one hundred kids take on St. George's army of The fallen and what seems to be a thousand diseased grown-ups.
