Henning Mankell nasceu em Estocolmo e cresceu em Sveg (Härjedalen) e Borås (Västergötland). Sua mulher é Eva Bergman. Faleceu aos 67 anos, em outubro de 2015. Mankell é mundialmente conhecido pelos romances de Kurt Wallander. Na Suécia Mankell é também conhecido como escritor de literatura infantil.
