Mongrels de Stephen Jones traz uma releitura moderna do mito do lobisomem.

O narrador-protagonista é o mais jovem de uma pequena família de lobisomens e é o responsável por contar a história que abarcará sua infância e adolescência até o momento de sua metamorfose.

É primeiramente uma história de terror, mas o que mais impressiona é o drama vivido pela família - a fuga, a rejeição social e a tentativa de preservação de sua cultura traçam um paralelo com a história indígena estadunidense.

Não há, contudo, nenhum ativismo explícito. De fato, tudo gira em torno do respeito a diferença e da dificuldade de ser uma minoria não interessada, ou capacitada, a demonstrações públicas e políticas.

O autor prefere focar a força de sua narrativa e estilo de escrita: o texto oscila com a idade do garoto e há momentos fantasiosos típicos de uma criança, fazendo com que haja uma guinada no estilo literário para algo que se torna quase como um documentário. Lembra outras obras como Doug Funny, por exemplo.

Fã incontestável que sou de fantasia sobrenatural, preciso elogiar a construção de mundo aqui proposta. Foge ao clássico, ao gênero rpg e ao moderno estilizado romântico. Não vou citar para não estragar o prazer de quem for ler.
