Daniel Morning is the star of his Birmingham, Alabama high school. A model student, a star athlete, and now a future Cornell University student, Daniel has gotten where he is because he worked hard and always did what he was told. When Misty Sandlin stands up to their teacher in class Daniel admires her daring. Drawn to Misty's boldness, Daniel begins to hang around Misty and her friends. As Misty and Daniel's relationship grows, she reveals the secret to her courage. She and her friends have the ability to become werewolves. Invited to join the pack, Daniel revels in the freedom he has as a wolf. But the longer they spend as wolves, the less they feel their humanity. When things go too far one night Daniel realizes he must quiet his inner wolf for good and save Misty from hers before he loses her forever. Reisz makes effective use of Birmingham's gritty and violent history as background for an unusual love story. While the romance between Misty and Daniel is one of the book's more appealing features, there is also enough action to keep the story moving. Recommended for older teens due to moments of teen sex, drug use, profane language, and violence.
