É mais do que um romance, embora o amor seja o tema principal.

Quando Addie LaRue começa a contar sua história de solidão fica claro que Schwab pegou um dos temas atuais mais populares e o transformou em uma história fantástica. O sentimento de solidão e a frustração de ser invisível é primariamente relatada em relação as interações com homens; as poucas personagens femininas aparecem sempre com ênfase no suporte físico-emocional.

Faz-se necessário não confundi-lo com um livro misândrico. A autora insere vários interesses amorosos que criam uma versão de amor, aliada a noção de temporalidade, que parece remeter a Belle Epoque com paixões rápidas, mas fadadas ao fracasso.

A grande sacada do livro não é o pretenso final, mas justamente o embate que acontece entre a personagem principal e Luc - um deus antigo que mistura elementos mitológicos e cultura underground. A metáfora de "xadrez com a morte" é auto-evidente, porém, poucos são os autores que conseguem escrever isso com uma abordagem nova para um gênero diferente.

Schwab bebe pesadamente do estilo chick-lit que esteve tão em voga no início do milênio, ou seja, triângulos amorosos, narração feminina em primeira pessoa e uma heroína deprimida. Se não tolera esse tipo de coisa, melhor passar longe.

Quanto ao nível de inglês, pode ser lido por alguém com inglês intermediário, embora o vocabulário possa exigir algumas consultas no dicionário.
